Demolition of old student block at Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus in Geelong
Building HA on Deakin’s Waurn Ponds Campus was one of the first total demolition projects undertaken at the University in many years. The student accommodation block consisted of four main towers all linked via inter-connecting walkways.
The structure was built in amongst four significant Victorian Blue gum trees with large tree protection zones that had to be undisturbed during the demolition. The towers were primarily a concrete structure and were stripped out first to allow for maximum recycling during the demolition phase.
This demolition used a large excavator, separating the towers from each other and reducing each tower one by one, loading out progressively as the demolition proceeded. All redundant services were removed form the ground underneath and the ground was leveled out to prevent the ponding of water and to establish a foundation, ready for future landscaping works.
